Likely crossed with Duke, as it has a stronger anise scent than the seed parent. Stems are frost tender but roots regrow very well each year.
This tree does not have any grafts on it.

(January 12, 2026) Update -- Spring flush already starting
(October 9, 2025) Update -- Doing ok, after lots of minor drought stress through summer.

(June 5, 2025) Update -- Stems survived somewhat but it's been slow to fill back in.
(February 8, 2025) Inter-freeze update -- After a few weeks of intermittent mild to moderate freezes (lowest temperature of 25.7°F/-3.5°C), this tree shows some damage but seems mostly happy.
(January 17, 2025) Pre-freeze update -- Looking very nice, but starting a new flush
(September 4, 2024) Update -- Looking pretty good this year.
(June 27, 2024) Update -- Roots survived well and are regrowing
(March 4, 2024) Update -- Pretty clearly dead below both grafts, but still green around the soil line. The Opal graft in particular looks like it may have been hardy enough to survive otherwise.
(January 28, 2024) Freeze update -- Stems look discolored above ground, more so than either of the grafts on this tree. Wouldn't be surprised if the grafts could have made it on a hardier rootstock, but I think they have been girded by a dead zone below the grafts.
(January 7, 2024) Update -- Built a cage around this tree to make it easier to protect if we get a bad freeze.

(October 28, 2023) Frost report -- No sign of damage on either Opal or Magdalena grafts from 30°F.
(October 26, 2023) Report -- Both grafts appear to have stalled their fall flushes.
